Dear Dr. Reed,
Do you have a favorite circumcision style and if why?
I have done them all (IMHO) and we offer 4 options: remove or do not remove frenulum, low, medium or high cut, loose moderate or tight, cut parallel to the corona which is an oblique cut and typical for most neo-natal circumcisions or perpendicular to the shaft of the penis.
While my recommendations are for moderate, more important is avoiding an overly tight or loose cut, or using a 2 layered closure to promote good wound healing, not making the stitches too tight less cross hatch marks occur, and recommending that the patient have the sutures removed if possible 12 to 14 days afterwards. This is not the type of operation I wish to rush through. You’ll have a hand held mirror in the operating room and of course this is preceded with a generous amount of discussion both in the office and exam room before you gown up.
Cordially, happy and healthy New Year,
Harold M. Reed, M.D.
