Minimize bruising following Cosmetic Circumcision

Dr. Reed,

Having a cosmetic circumcision in Miami with you next week.
Any recommendations to minimize bruising.

Dear Aiden,

Please no aspirin or aspirin products, no anti-inflammatory drugs such as Motrin, Advil, Alleve, or Cox 2 inhibitors such as Celebrex or Vioxx for 2 weeks  before surgery. No Vitamin E (check any multi-vitamins you are taking for Vitamin E).  No excessive alcohol or spices or fish oils  for 2 weeks before surgery as this may promote bruising. Bruising can be reduced (many believe) with Bromelain 500 mg 1 twice a day, Arnica montana (Boiron brand) dose 30C (take 4 small tablets sublingually, 4 times a day), vitamin C 500 mg (3 times a day) starting 1 week before surgery. Do take these medications unless there are specific reasons why you choose not to and let’s discuss this beforehand.

Boiron brand is available at Whole Foods and on the web at for “pennies” and we do notice a difference.  You will need 2 vials.

Next we recommend bed rest after your circumcision.  If you are from out of town, this means going to a nearby hotel, ideally Daddy O one block away.  You can turn from side to side or lie on your back, but early ambulation is discouraged.  Don’t be like the painted I saw at he mall; that night, standing in line at a local movie theater.  Have your prescriptions filled in advanced.  Then generous amount of bed rest for the next day or so.  Plan on my seeing you the next day to check for swelling.  If noted, I will release the top side of your dressing.
