Dr. Reed, Is it normal to have swelling on the underside of my distal shaft just behind the head?  What about bluish discoloration? Reason to worry?  Neil

Dear Neil,

Having done about 8-000 adult circumcisions and many penile surgeries at the Reed Centre, and at the hospitals where I also practice, I can tell you some swelling is normal.  That’s why we slit the outer dressing on top, the day after surgery as the swelling may continue for another few days, before it subsides.  The underside of the distal penile shaft is most prone to swell as that area of connective tissue is the loosest.  Your greatest friend in wound healing uis bed rest for a good 24 hours.  Your heart has to be at the level of your penuiss  Lower extremity exercises are encouraged.  Of course get out of bed to use the commode and eat.

Some bruise effect with bluish discoloration of the skin is normal.  Within a few days, this may appear as a yellowish cast (that’s residual iron and is entirely normal).  Please call me after surgery with any concerns.

Cordially,

Harold. M. Reed, M.D.
