Dear Dr. Reed,
Have phimosis with tearing usually every1 to 2 months. At this point unable to retract for daily hygiene. Of course after a tearing episode there is down time sexually for a week or more. Please advise. Jason
Usually these episode cause deposition of more scar tissue which only results in inevitable tearing sooner rather than later. Steroids may extend the frequency of episodes, but is not a permanent fix. A cosmetic adult circumcision is what I would recommend.
Be prepared to have removed any tight foreskin as leaving it still attached will not result in a cure and worse yet may form a constricting band on your shaft (paraphimosis). See http://penisdoctor.com/before-after-adult-circumcision/ photographic example 14/1-3.
The medical term for just inflammation of the foreskin is called posthitis. If the glans is inflamed that’s called balanitis. If both he foreskin and glans are inflamed that’s balano-posthitis. Balanos in Greek refers to acorn. Please call the office for a brief discussion with me about your medical history (age, height, weight, medications).
With kindest regards,
